Twenty minutes later, Jake sat at this desk completing old paperwork. A sixty-day report on a murder unrelated to the prostitute murders. Sheila sat at another desk directly across from him. Every once in a while, her gaze shifted from the papers in front of her to brush across his face. A couple of times, he met her eyes. In the contact, both of them seemed to know what was happening between them, but not what to do about it.

They were in the midst of one of these visual contact sessions when Jake’s phone rang. He grabbed it on the second ring.

“Hello?” In his distraction, Jake forgot proper telephone procedures.

“Is this Jake Wiley?” A voice he didn’t recognize came over the wires.

“Yes, it is. What can I do for you?”

“You’re a cop, right?”

“A detective. Yeah.” Jake got several calls each week from people wanting to tell him things about other people. Sometimes valuable, most often not.

“You’ve done real well for yourself, Jake.”

“I don’t know what you mean. Who is this?” Sheila glanced up at the sharpness in Jake’s voice.

“My name’s Frank Lee.”

“Frank Lee?” Jake repeated, meeting Sheila’s eye with a question in his expression.

She scribbled something on a note pad, slid it across to him. He read, “The man with a limp – no info on him yet.” Jake nodded.

“You don’t remember me. I know you pretty good, though.” Jake’s brain raced through the names and voices he stored there. Came up dry. Frank went on. “I wanta meet with you. Got a little legal problem I need some help with. How’s an hour from now at the diner on Grand?”

Jake immediately rejected the idea. “No, can’t do it then. Not good for me. What kind of legal problem you got? Maybe we can handle it on the phone.”

“You haven’t found out anything about me yet, that it?” Frank ignored the questions from Jake. “That detective with the face and the boobs comin’ up dry?”

“Yeah.” Jake decided the truth was okay. “That’s it. I’m not gonna meet with you ‘til we know more about you. Give me a phone number I can call you back at.”

A chuckle came through the phone. “Smart, Jake. Real smart. But you always were. I’ll call you tomorrow.” With that, he hung up.

“He wants to meet with you?” Sheila asked.

“Yeah. Wouldn’t say why other than he has a little legal problem. Said he knows me. Can’t imagine where he knows me from, though.”
